Room by Room, Bath

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

REALLY? Does the subject have to be BATHROOMS???

YES! Because even bathrooms need to be cleaned and Feng Shuied!!!

SO, let’s do a little scrub a dub dub and have fun in the tub.

Keep in mind Bathrooms are meant to provide relief and refreshment. Also, most people feel vulnerable in the bathroom (think about how much time people are naked and wet in this environment). Following Feng Shui principles and common-sense techniques elevates bathrooms into more desirable spaces. Especially small bathrooms (like ours), benefit from thoughtful organization.

Because the water element is robust in bathrooms, adding warm earth elements creates balanced energy. Earthy things like tile, pottery, plants with plenty of soil, and bright colored objects complement water well. Browns, reds, pinks, purples, oranges, yellows, and other earth tones feel cozy. Some Feng Shui experts recommend preventing “energy drains” by keeping toilet lids, drains, and shower curtains closed. This is largely a myth thanks to the high quality and visual appeal of modern bathrooms. It can be a good idea to keep bathroom doors closed if you have small children (toilets are a drowning risk). And personally, I think a closed toilet looks better than an open one.

I cannot emphasize enough the “keep it simple” philosophy in the bathroom!

I regularly clean out and restock our toiletries. I limit items kept in the bathroom to things we use daily. Everything else finds a home in the linen closet or bedroom. Let’s be clear, the storage options in our bathroom are super limited. Someday, our dream bathroom will include ample shelving and drawers and all things bathroom related will live in the bathroom (an organizer’s dream).

For now, we use a medicine cabinet and floating shelves to facilitate toiletry storage. Baskets help us to consolidate and beautify. I like to keep things easy to access, so I use under sink storage for things like trash and toilet paper. I also have a vanity area setup in our bedroom.

Drawers almost always make for the best below the waist storage. And shelves, towel racks, and hooks are ideal for anything above the waist. Linen Closets have an intimate connection with the bathroom. Our linen closet serves many purposes. It is a place for medicines (see, “Tips for Tackling Colds”), stores our cleaning supplies, and holds both extra and active toiletries. Labels have worked wonders for our linen closet along with easy basket categories.

Other things I appreciate in a bathroom include: Soft washable rugs, cloth shower curtains (even the liner), drain screens to catch hair, grippy bath mats, plastic baskets, plants (see “Positively Planting It”), something fun in the décor, quality shower heads, great water pressure, a step stool and little potty for the kids (this is the mom in me), good lighting with options (see future article “Lighting the Way”), room spray with essential oils, and a nice sounding fan for both privacy and air quality.

Love Always,

Meg
